2. SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2008 VICTORIAN PREMIER"S LITERARY AWARDS
Arts Minister Lynne Kosky has announced the shortlist for the 2008 Victorian Premier"s Literary Awards.
38 works have been shortlisted across 12 categories, including a new award for Best Music Theatre Script. Winners will share in a total prize pool of $210,000.
The 2008 awards attracted 653 entries with a record number of entries in the First History and Indigenous Writing Categories.

3. VICTORIA ROCKS FUNDING ANNOUNCED
Last month Arts Minister Lynne Kosky announced Victoria Rocks funding totalling $487,000. Forty-eight projects were supported covering a wide range of contemporary music genres, established and emerging artists, and a number of strategic industry partnerships. Projects include:
- International tours for Ash Grunwald, The Ploughboys, Whitley, Goyte and The Band Who Knew Too Much - Regional tours by Children Collide and Goldentone - Recording projects for Angie Hart, Dan Sultan and The Paradise Motel - A festival for regional bands in Gippsland, established by Magic Dirt - The inaugural Australasian World Music Expo to be held in Melbourne in November 2008
Victoria Rocks aims to strengthen the Victorian independent music sector and provide professional and career development opportunities for local artists.

4. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS - BIG SOUND MUSIC CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP FOR MUSICIANS AND MANAGERS
A new scholarship has been announced through the Victoria Rocks program for Victorian musicians and managers to attend Brisbane"s 2008 Big Sound music conference, 10 - 12 September 2008.
The 2008 event includes prominent music industry and media players taking part in three days of panels and new music showcases.
Scholarships will be available to a total of six Victorians including three Indigenous Victorian musicians and managers. The scholarship will include conference registration fees and a further $1,500 for travel and accommodation costs.
Applications are being called for through an Expressions of Interest process and will close on 22 August 2008.

5. DEVELOPMENT GRANTS RECOGNISE VICTORIA"S DIVERSE ARTS SECTOR
A range of artforms from literature to dance, multimedia to tapestry, jewellery making and curatorship have been supported in the latest round of Arts Development grants.
45 projects will share in $623,000 in funding announced by Arts Minister Lynne Kosky. Nineteen of the funded projects involved regionally-based artists and 16 projects involve artists with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

6. VICTORIAN ARTISTS ATTEND FESTIVAL OF PACIFIC ARTS
Welcome home to three Victorian artists who were part of the delegation representing Australia at the 2008 Festival of Pacific Arts in American Samoa.
Forty one Australian representatives attended the festival held from 20 July to 2 August, which aims to showcase and celebrate traditional and contemporary Pacific arts.
The Victorian delegates for the 2008 festival were: - Gunditjmara woman, Bronwyn Razem of Ballarat, a contemporary urban indigenous artist who works across a variety of mediums but is widely known for her traditional basket weaving; - Bairnsdale"s Lee Darroch, a Yorta Yorta woman whose diverse art encompasses carpet design, possum skin cloak-making, basket weaving, pastels, textiles, sculpture and large-scale public art installations; and - Port Fairy"s Maree Clarke, a Mutti Mutti, Wamba Wamba and Yorta Yorta woman who is working to revive the art of possum-skin cloak making.
The Victorian artists were supported by a $30,000 grant made through Arts Victoria"s Indigenous Travel and Professional Development Fund which supports Victorian Indigenous artists and arts workers to access professional development opportunities.
Artists from 27 Pacific nations attended the festival"s performances, presentations and forums.

7. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS - OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIGENOUS MUSICIANS TO ATTEND WOMEX08
Arts Victoria is calling for applications from Victorian Indigenous musicians to attend WOMEX, Spain"s annual World Music Expo, in October 2008.
Through the Indigenous Travel and Professional Development Fund, Arts Victoria will provide $2,500 in sponsorship to help meet the costs of travel, registration and miscellaneous expenses. Additional costs would be met by the artists.
WOMEX is held annually in Saville, Spain. The 2008 Festival will be held from 29 October - 2 November 2008 and will brings together professionals from all over the world for a program that includes concerts, trade fairs, conferences and even documentary films.
The closing date for applications is 15 August, 2008

8. EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM
Arts Victoria"s Education Partnerships program is the new name to describe funding programs that provide opportunities for artists and arts organisations to support and enrich learning and teaching in Victorian primary and secondary schools.
The Program has two funding categories. 1. ARTISTS IN SCHOOLS - Grants of $6,500 towards artists" fees to work in a primary secondary school. 2. EXTENDED SCHOOL RESIDENCIES - Grants up to $36,000 to support longer term collaborative projects between arts organisations and a school.

9. CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FROM ARTS ORGANISATIONS - EXTENDED SCHOOL RESIDENCIES
The Extended School Residencies program supports collaborative projects between arts organisations and schools over a minimum of two school terms. The program provides funding to a school of up to $36,000 to work in partnership with an arts organisation. Approximately three Victorian government primary and secondary schools will be supported through the program each year.
Expressions of Interest from arts organisations wishing to participate in the program in 2009 are due to Arts Victoria by 1 September 2008.

The Extended School Residencies program is currently running as a pilot program in four schools: - Coburn Primary School, Melton in partnership with Polyglot Puppet Theatre; - Corio Bay Senior College in partnership with ACMI; - Newport Lakes Primary School in partnership with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; and - Sunshine North Primary School in partnership with Music Viva.

10. $69,800 TO PRESERVE IRREPLACEABLE INDIGENOUS MANUSCRIPTS
Museum Victoria has received a grant from the Victorian Government to digitise significant items from its extensive Australian Indigenous Manuscripts Collections.
Four important collections, the Kenyon, Howitt, Endacott and Bulmer Papers contain more than 8,000 pages from notebooks, maps, letters, drawings, articles and other materials significant to Victoria"s indigenous history. Thanks to the grant, these collections will be digitised and digital images will be linked to the museum"s electronic catalogue. The museum hopes that digital collections will ultimately be accessible via the museum"s website.
Museum Victoria currently holds approximately 10,000 items in its Australian Indigenous Manuscripts Collection.

11. TOP SCORE FOR GAME ON
Melbourne set a world record for attendance as ACMI"s popular Game On exhibition came to a close. The exhibition attracted 129,372 visitors from 6 March-13 July. A further 19,479 people attended the associated events, forums, school holiday programs and screenings.
Prior to coming to Melbourne, Game On toured internationally to cities including London, Helsinki, Chicago and Hong Kong. The previous attendance record of 127,000 was held by Chicago, who hosted the exhibition in 2005, for a run that was three months longer than Melbourne"s.
2008 is already shaping up to be a blockbuster year for arts attendance and exhibitions. More than 110,000 people visited The Medieval Imagination: Illuminated Manuscripts from Cambridge, Australia and New Zealand, the State Library of Victoria"s first major exhibition. Almost 100,000 people have already visited NGV"s Art Deco: 1919-1939, which opened on June 28.

12. MELBOURNE WINTER MASTERPIECES TO BRING DALI TO MELBOURNE
Despite the winter chill, clocks will be melting at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2009 with the announcement that a new exhibition, Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire, will be the next to be shown as part of the highly successful Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series.
The exhibition would draw from the holdings of the two largest Dali collections in the world - the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí in Figueres, Spain and the Salvador Dalí Museum in St Petersburg, Florida. It will also be the first time Australia has ever shown a full retrospective of Salvador Dalí"s works.
Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire will follow on the success of the previous Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitions, from The Impressionists in 2004 to this year"s exhibition, Art Deco 1910-1939. More than 1.1 million people have attended Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitions since 2004, almost 25 per cent coming from interstate or overseas. So far exhibitions have generated more than $80 million to the Victorian economy.
Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire will open at the National Gallery of Victoria on 13 June, 2009 and run until 4 October, 2009. Another new exhibition, A Day in Pompeii, will be shown concurrently at Melbourne Museum.

13. A WORLD OF ART AT THE 2008 MELBOURNE ART FAIR
Approximately 30,000 people attended the 2008 Melbourne Art Fair, making this year"s event the most successful to date.
A feast of contemporary visual arts from across Australia and the world was on offer at what has become the most important visual arts event in Australia.
Over 80 galleries were represented at the biennial Fair which showcased almost 3,000 by more than 900 artists from nine countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, China, Japan and Germany.
The Melbourne Art Fair receives $200,000 in biennial funding from the Victorian Government as part of the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy.

14. CRAFT VICTORIA"S A MONTH ABOUT MAKING FESTIVAL - NOW ON
Craft Victoria has launched a new month-long festival celebrating contemporary craft and design.The A Month About Making festival invites people to get behind the scenes of the creative, craft-making process.
A Month About Making will bring together more than 200 craft practitioners, designers and industry professionals for a diverse program of workshops, seminars, forums, residencies and public events.
The festival runs from 8 August until 6 September 2008 at venues around Melbourne.

15. REGIONAL ART DECO FESTIVAL
As NGV"s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, Art Deco 1910 -1939 continues to draw crowds in the city; the Art Deco 2008 Regional Festival is set to showcase art deco treasures across regional Victoria. From 31 August - 12 October, 20 Art Deco inspired events will be held at locations across the State: from an exhibition of ski wear and travel posters at Mount Buller to architectural tours of Ballarat and Wangaratta, and films at Charlton.
The festival is a pilot project between Museums Australia (Victoria) and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and is supported by a $100,000 grant made through Arts Victoria"s Sector Development Partnerships program.

17. RECORD BREAKING YEAR FOR MUSEUM VICTORIA
The 2007-08 financial year was the most successful year to date for Museum Victoria, with over 1.5 million visitors across the three museums and IMAX Theatre.
All Museum Victoria venues recorded excellent attendance. Melbourne Museum"s 732,335 visitors and the Immigration Museum"s 132,877 resulted in the best ever yearly figures for each site. IMAX, which became part of Museum Victoria in 2004, also had its best ever visitation with 326,411 patrons.
Melbourne Museum and Scienceworks both welcomed their 5 millionth visitor since opening in 2000 and 1992 respectively. The Immigration Museum welcomed its one millionth visitor since opening in 1998.

18. VICTORIAN ARTISTS HONORED
The talent and contribution of Victorian artists and arts organisations has been recognised in several areas over the past month.
Opera: Congratulations to soprano Emily Blanch who took out the first place in the McDonald"s Operatic Aria awards held at the Sydney Opera House on 13 July. The prestigious award includes a cash prize, an international study scholarship, an opportunity to attend rehearsals at Opera Australia and to sing with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra & Choir.
Lifetime Achievement: Musician Archie Roach received the NAIDOC Award for lifetime achievement. NAIDOC awards recognise the contribution indigenous people make to Australian life.
Barry Humphries and Sue Nattrass received the 2008 JC Williamson Award for outstanding contribution to the Australian live performance industry.
Helpmann Awards: There were several Victorian winners at the 2008 Helpmann Awards presented in Sydney on 28 July.
-Chunky Move"s Glow was named Best Dance Work and Mortal Engine named Best Visual or Physical Theatre Show. -Barry Kosky won Best Original Score for The Tell-tale Heart -Shane Jacobson won Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Guys and Dolls
The Victorian Museum Awards were also held this month, with the Bendigo Art Gallery, Ballarat"s Gold Museum and Emeritus Professor Margaret Manion, guest curator of the State Library of Victoria"s The Medieval Imagination: Illuminated Manuscripts from Cambridge, Australia and New Zealand exhibition, among the winners. .

19. 2009 ASIALINK RESIDENCY PROGRAM - APPLICATIONS OPEN
Applications are now open for Asialink"s 2009 Arts Residency Program.
The program provides opportunities for Australian arts practitioners to spend up to four months living and working in an Asian country. Grants of up to $12,000 are available. The program also assists artists by providing a network of initial contacts in the host country.
Up to 40 residencies will be offered in 2009. Residencies are offered in: - Arts Management - Literature - Performing Arts, and - Visual Arts
